Vasaloppet has been practiced in Sweden for more than 90 years, and was created in honor of Sweden's King Gustav Vasaloppet's grueling journey from Sallen to Mulla, when he escaped Danish rule. The first Vasaloppet was held in March 1922 in Sweden.

　　On March 15, 2003, Vasaloppet China officially entered Changchun Jingyuetan, making China the fourth country to host Vasaloppet events after Sweden, the United States and Japan. 　　From June 17 to June 25, 2014, at the invitation of the International Ski Federation (FIS) and the Worldloppet Organization, a delegation of the Changchun government, consisting of the Changchun Jingyue National Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone Administrative Committee, the Municipal Sports Bureau, the Jingyuetan Lake Tourism Group and Vasaloppet, traveled to the city of Riva, Italy, to participate throughout the annual meeting of the Worldloppet member countries, and submitted the official application of Changchun Jingyuetan Vasaloppet International Ski Festival to join the organization. On the morning of June 22nd, Beijing time, after a closed-door vote by the 16 member countries, China's membership in the Worldloppet Organization was officially approved! China became the only country among the new members with a unanimous vote, and also became the second event in Asia to join the organization!
